The Cambrian Mountains

The Cambrian Mountains rise in the very heart of Wales, and stretch almost to the West Coast; this is where we enjoy life at Blaencyswch.

Ceredigion and the Cambrians are a special place where the hills, river valleys and meadows have sustained life for millennia. The area's relative remoteness allows those lucky enough to live here to do so at their own pace.

The landscape is steeped in Welsh history and heritage, where agriculture, language and culture are entwined. Rugged mountains, a dramatic coastline and vast unspoilt landscapes. Welcome to Ceredigion and the Cambrian Mountains - a place of breath-taking natural beauty.

Our fabulous coastal path...............

Ceredigion's 60 miles (96km) Coast Path is a very special part of the Wales Coast Path, with probably the most varied landscape and terrain of the 870 mile (1400km) route. As well as great views north towards Snowdonia and south towards Pembrokeshire, the Ceredigion Coast path has a wealth of wildlife, geological and archaeological features and a colourful history to discover along the way.

In the cottages, we provide a walking guide detailing a number of fantastic circular walks taking in sections of the coastal path along with other breath-taking scenery.

Blaencyswch is approximately half an hour's drive from the coast.

The coastline offers a huge selection of beaches to visit. There are craggy coves with rockpools to explore, and flat golden sands for a shoes-off walk in the surf.

.......and beaches

Our dark skies at night..........

Blaencyswch Holiday Cottages are within a 'dark skies' area; the absence of night-time light pollution makes for some of the best star gazing around. Simply pick a clear night, ideally during the new moon phase of the lunar cycle, and look up. It sometimes feels like there are more stars than sky!

Our night-time skyscape is truly awe-inspiring; it can be quite humbling to gaze at the immensity of the universe - the same sky that has captivated humanity since the beginning of time.

.........and sunny days out

With the coast on one side and mountains on the other, there is always a great day-out to be enjoyed in Ceredigion. The roads are quiet, well maintained, and run through fabulous countryside, making exploring the region a pleasure.

People in this part of the country seem more relaxed than many parts of the UK. It feels like everybody has the time to talk, with a genuine friendliness that is both refreshing and infectious!

Below are a few options for local days out. In the cottages, we keep up-to-date leaflets with many other attractions and activities. Feel free do do as much or as little exploring as you like. Sometimes it's nice just to sit outside, enjoy the fresh air and birdsong and do nothing but relax!

There is plenty to do and see in Ceredigion, but no need to rush any of it.....

Aberaeron

A visit to Aberaeron is a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. The brightly coloured Georgian houses overlooking the harbour give this coastal town a special holiday feel.

There are some excellent eateries and independent local shops to browse around.

Llanerchaeron

A National Trust property, Llanerchaeron is an elegant Georgian villa designed by john Nash.

The grounds, lake and walled garden are exceptional and well worth a visit.

Cors Caron

Situated a couple of miles north of Tregaron is the expansive wetland nature reserve of Cors Caron.

Peat bogs are surrounded by reedbeds, fen, wet grassland, woodland, waterways and ponds. These varied habitats support a wealth of wildlife that may be observed either from the raised board-walks routed through the reserve, or from the purpose built observatory.

Rheidol Railway

Take the steam train from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge - home of the famous water falls.

Enjoy the countryside change as you travel through wide open fields and meadows, woodland and rugged mountain scenery. The narrow track gauge allows the railway to follow the contours of the terrain with many sharp curves and steep gradients which add to the railway’s charm.

Walking & Cycling

With the coastal path a short drive away, and the Cambrians on our doorstep, there are plenty of options for adventurous cycling and hiking, or for just a gentle stroll with great views.

The national cycle network runs through Llanfair Clydogau - about a mile from Blaencyswch, and there are local routes to suit all abilities detailed on various websites online.

Mountain bikers have miles of local bridleways and forestry tracks to explore, along with purpose built technical and downhill tracks at Bwlch Nant yr Arian - near Aberystwyth and Brechfa - a short drive south of Lampeter.

We Have locked, undercover bicycle storage at Blaencyswch,

which guests are welcome to use to store their bikes during their stay. We also have a good selection of tools, track pump, oil etc. and of course a bucket and sponge for cleaning!
